MILWAUKEE - An escapee from the Milwaukee County House of Correction was captured Sunday near 12th and Hadley.

Michael Verville jumped from a second story window when sheriff's detectives surrounded the home. He was arrested after a short foot chase.

Authorities said Verville, 44, admitted smoking a large amount of crack cocaine at the house.

Verville suffered cuts from climbing over a razor-wire fence during his escape. He is being treated at the hospital and will be taken to the county jail before being returned to the House of Correction.

Verville was being held at the House of Correction in Franklin on 68th Street north of Ryan Road. He was there on $5,000 cash bail on charges of burglary, criminal damage to property and a prior escape attempt.

Early Saturday, he found a way to break out of his jail window and crawl outside.

He climbed over a fence and razor wire.

It was then that Verville allegedly received help from outside. Someone provided him with a change of clothes and a mountain bike, and he took off.

Milwaukee County Supervisor Mark Borkowski said the facility is under-staffed and wouldn't be surprised if that's why Verville was able to escape.

"These poor guys are getting burned out. They're working mandatory double shifts. Something's got to give," said Borkowski.

On Sunday, citizen witnesses, who had spotted Verville, led sheriff’s detectives to an address on Milwaukee's north side where he was recaptured.

And now neighbors who live by the jail facility in Franklin want to know how it happened. "There hasn't been any word on how he got out of the House of Corrections," said Paul Kraemer.

Although Kraemer is glad Verville is in custody, he wonders if more needs to be done to make sure it doesn't happen again.

"Now it's a different story. Certainly it's something they need to be aware of," said Kraemer.
