Streetza Pizza Gaining Steam

MILWAUKEE— Look for them at closing time.  The popular Streetza pizza truck is likely to be parked near your favorite Water Street watering hole, serving up local pizza cooked in a mobile 650 degree oven.

“Half of our slices are named after our Twitter followers,” said creator Scott Baitinger as the Streetza truck was parked near Bombers on Water Street.  “We started a Facebook page months before we started and asked our friends and followers to vote on our logo.”

That mastery of social media has led to lots of mainstream media.  This week Streetza is featured in Time magazine.  The popular truck was featured earlier in GQ.  Lots of local publications have featured Streetza as well.

But mainstream media doesn’t produce immediate traffic the way social media does.

“I get a lot of insurance sales people calling and cheese manufacturers,” Baitinger said when asked about the impact of the magazine features.

But on Friday night, Baitinger sent out a Tweet, alerting his followers the truck was set up in front of Bombers.  There was an immediate crowd.

“Most of the time I’m wasted when I get it,” said Bob Lehmann as he sat on his bicycle seemingly surprised at the truck’s arrival before sunset. “That’s the perfect time for it, right outside the bar!”

That was Scott’s thinking.

“Streetza started as an idea at about two in the morning on Water Street,” he said with a laugh.

It is an idea catching on because of its simplicity and genius.

“It’s good and it’s available,” Sarah Booth said, summing up the success of her friend’s pizza.
