DNR Adopts Higher Deer Population Goals

  • Print

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Natural Resources Board has adopted increases in deer population goals in more than 40 management zones under pressure from hunters.

Outraged deer hunters complained last fall the Department of Natural Resources' herd control strategies have so thinned the herd their sport is in jeopardy.

The DNR in October proposed raising population goals in 13 zones. Legislators, feeling pressure from hunters, threatened to reject the plan without revisions.

The DNR's new plan calls for higher goals in 43 zones, adding 60,000 deer to the state's overall population goal.

The changes will form the basis of rules for this fall's hunting seasons. They're still subject to legislative review.
