Riding to D.C. for Health Care Protest
MILWAUKEE - Dorothy Sykes held her bag of prescription medications at her home in Milwaukee Sunday. It is a financial burden that she says is bleeding her dry.
"I break my pills in half. It's better to have some than none. That's how I survive," said Sykes.
She breaks her blood pressure pills in half because it's tough to afford the monthly bills that have skyrocketed, she says.
"We're thinking the rich people in Congress, they don't care about us. The middle class, the lower income, they just don't care," she said.
That's why Dorothy, along with dozens of other people boarded a bus Sunday. Their destination: Washington D.C. for a protest on Tuesday against health insurance companies.
"We picked up folks from Eau Claire, Tomah, La Crosse, Madison, and now Milwaukee and they're all heading down to this protest," said Robert Kraig with Citizen Action of Wisconsin who sponsored the ride.
Republican congressman Jim Sensenbrenner understands the protesters' frustration. But at one of his town hall meetings Sunday night, he said the current health care bill should be thrown out and legislators should start the process over.
"People are concerned, they're frustrated," he said. "It's government control over everything. It's running up the debt to our children and grandchildren."
But Dorothy can't wait any longer, she wants health care reform now and is willing to travel across country to get it.
"The big insurance companies are ripping us off," she said.
