16 UWM Protesters Arrested
MILWAUKEE - Sixteen people were arrested when a protest over tuition increases spun out of control on the UWM campus Thursday.
A vice chancellor allowed one of the protesters into Chapman Hall to drop off pamphlets in Chancellor Carlos Santiago's office, then called campus police when dozens of protesters tried to enter the building.
UWM Police called the Milwaukee Police Department for backup, and officers spent an hour rounding up protesters.
"The demonstrators got out of hand, pushing and shoving and yelling for their rights and demanding the chancellor meet them," said one witness.
The protest was part of the “National Day of Action for Education Right,” and the students were demanding a tuition freeze and increased money for need-based scholarships, and a pay cut for the chancellor and all top level school administrators before UWM cuts any faculty positions.
