South Milwaukee Schools Propose Arts Cuts

By Lauren Leamanczyk

SOUTH MILWAUKEE - Arts and music students planned to protest Wednesday night's school board meeting by showing just how important music programs are to them.

They will play instruments, sing and wear costumes from previous performances as School Board members and district staff walked into the meeting.

Like many districts, South Milwaukee faces a wrenching budget battle. The superintendent says he is forced to cut hundreds of thousands from the budget because state aid and revenue increases have not kept pace with the costs of running the district and paying employee health benefits.

The high school's orchestra, golf team and other programs could be targeted.

Also proposed are increases in athletic fees.
