Fallout From Stancl Case Remains

  • Print

NEW BERLIN - When the Anthony Stancl case broke last year, it made newspaper and magazine headlines nationwide. GQ's cover headline read, "The Sex Scandal That Shocked A Small Town High School."

Now, a year later, Stancl's crimes still have a big impact at New Berlin Eisenhower High School.

Prosecutors say Stancl blackmailed and abused as many as 31 people.

Much has changed at his high school since then. Student Peter Schussman can't help but notice the changes.

"The security is much more tight. Cameras installed, we have those teachers who watch the doors now," Schussman said.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Stancl to 15 years behind bars. His former classmates are glad justice is being served.

"I think that should definitely happen, because terrible crimes happened. He deserves that punishment," Schussman said.

It's not just students still dealing with Stancl's crimes. Parents in New Berlin are now more savvy about Web sites like Facebook, and they know more about what their kids do online.

"I actually got a Facebook account to kind of keep tabs on my niece," said New Berlin resident Becky Coello.

Stancl may be behind bars, but it will take much longer for the feeling of security to return for some in New Berlin.

"I think about it every time I take my kids to the park. I don't want them going to the bathroom alone," Coello said.

Students who spoke to TODAY'S TMJ4 said they still use Facebook and other social networking sites just as much as before, but they are more careful about what they post online.
