'Secret Succession' Plan Dropped
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A state senator has dropped a second attempt to create a process for choosing interim successors for legislators killed in a terrorist attack. Sen. Bob Jauch of Superior withdrew an amendment Tuesday that would have allowed legislative leaders to pick replacements if several lawmakers die as a result of enemy action. Jauch led an effort to review how the Legislature would keep functioning in the event of a major disaster. A bill approved by the Senate on a voice vote would allow the Assembly and Senate to meet virtually if they could not meet in person or in a temporary location outside of Madison if necessary. The bill would not detail how to choose successors. Last year, the Senate tabled a plan that would have allowed lawmakers to keep a secret list of successors after critics denounced the proposal.
