Man Tased at Southridge Mall

GREENDALE - A police detective tased a man in Southridge Mall Saturday. The 20-year-old man fell to the floor and was unresponsive.

Nurses assisted with CPR and Southridge Mall provided a "paddle device" to try to resuscitate the man until rescue personal arrived.

"Everybody was watching and waiting to see if he was coming back (alive) or not," worker Claire Mitchell told TODAY'S TMJ4-HD exclusively.

Mitchell was on the second floor of the mall at 4:20 p.m. when she and other shoppers got more than they bargained for.

According to Greendale police chief Robert Dams, the detective was on routine patrol when she saw the suspect grab a woman and push her backwards. He was yelling at the woman not to buy any (expletive) shoes, Dams said.

The detective identified herself, but the suspect became "extremely aggressive" and started coming toward the detective.

Dams said the suspect was warned he would be tased, but said, "I'm not afraid."

The suspect continued toward the detective. According to Dams, the officer "feared for her safety," and deployed the Taser.

That's when the man dropped to the ground.

"He kind of lost consciousness, his heart stopped and they were doing CPR on him," Mitchell said.

Mitchell says everyone in that part of the mall stopped what they were doing. They were practically silent as they watched rescue workers struggle to bring him back.

"Pretty much the whole mall stopped to look. It took about 15 minutes to bring him back to life," Mitchell said.

She and other witnesses said once the man was brought back to life he was moving around on the ground.

Officials then took him to the hospital leaving behind a shopping mall stunned with what they just witnessed.

JS Online reports the man is hospitalized in stable condition.

Dams said the investigating is continuing.

On Sunday morning, mall manager Mary Wenger directed all questions to police. But Wagner added, "We are committed to providing a safe, quality shopping environment for our shoppers and mall employees."
