Double Digit Drunk Driving Arrests

By Nick Iannelli and Jay Sorgi

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department is reporting deputies made a total of 55 drunk driving arrests throughout the overnight hours on New Year's eve.

The stats represent an increase of 9, or 32% from last year.

A statement from the department says the new year brought the county's task force up to 500 OWI arrests since last April.

"That represents 500 less impaired drivers on local roads as a result of the Task Force," reads the statement.

There were four OWI related crashes through the overnight hours with two of them resulting in minor injuries to two people.  Most of the drunk driving arrests occurred between 1 and 3 in the morning.

Other Problems On The Roads

Sheriff's deputies in Dodge County had to make two arrests involving alleged offenders with long OWI records.

Deputies had to chase a suspect from a restaurant ion East Avenue in the Village of Lomira at about 10:00 p.m. New Years' Eve.

"There was a foot pursuit. Other deputies responded to the area. They located him hiding in the bushes. He was taken into custody for OWI sixth offense," said Sheriff's Sergeant David Weningar.

The arrested man also had six outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Eight minutes after the new year began, a deputy arrested a man for an 8th drunk driving offense in near the corner of Highway 33 and Dakota Road in Hermann.

"When he was at the hospital, he got combative, and he was arrested also for resist obstructing, and that gentleman was also on probation for OWI offenses."

The State Patrol reported two drunk driving arrests in the area.
