Local NewsStandoff Ends, Children OKBy Nick IannelliRICHMOND - Investigators are talking with a 49-year-old man face to face after deputies say he took his two daughters hostage and held them for more than two hours in his home early Tuesday. Accoring to authorities, Richard L. Sallmann locked his 10 and 13-year-old daughters in his bathroom where the children were eventually able to get a hold of a phone and call police. A SWAT team rescued the kids, but the incident was not over as Sheriff David Graves with the Walworth County Sheriff's Department says Sallmann fired a gun outside his home, with deputies returning fire. "We don't know exactly what type of weapon he has but it could be long range." Nobody was injured in the exchange. Motive So Far is a Mystery It's unclear at this point what set Sallmann off. Neighbors as well as authorities are scratching their heads, trying to figure it out. "When we found out there was an incident like this that included firearms and things we were totally shocked," says neighbor Jerry Swanson. "That doesn't sound like him at all. I don't know what pushed his buttons." Sallmann was reportedly finishing up with a tough divorce. He's also said to have a history of bi-polar disorder. |
