Local NewsMitchell International Traveler Concerned About Airport SecurityBy Heather ShannonWAUKESHA - Victoria Anderson of Waukesha filed a complaint with the Transportation Security Administration after she said she was able to get on a plane with a can of pepper spray in her carry-on bag. Anderson said she flew to Los Angeles on her honeymoon. When she arrived in L.A. she opened her purse and noticed her pepper spray was still in her purse. "It's just insane that people can get through with something like this," Anderson said. She contacted the TSA as soon as she arrived home from her honeymoon to let them know what happened. "Do you think they took your complaint seriously?" reporter Heather Shannon asked Anderson. "Absolutely not," she replied. Anderson said the written response she received is proof of that. In an email accidentally attached to hers, a TSA employee wrote to the co-worker handling Anderson's complaint, saying, "Please have a short and general response prepared. Don't like giving these too much credence or validation." "After I saw that I was just livid," Anderson said. After that response, Anderson said she's not surprised at all that someone got through security with potential explosives on Christmas Day. "It's just insane that people can get through with something like this," she said. That foiled attack prompted the TSA to increase security at airports across the country. "They did test all of my son's bottles with a machine to make sure there wasn't anything in the liquid," Milwaukee passenger Dominique Alfonso said. She added that was the first time her son's formula had ever been tested. Passengers also noticed an increased police presence and much longer lines to get screened. Standing in those lines is time Anderson said is time well spent. "I am more than willing to wait in as long a line as I have to in order for them to properly look through my things," Anderson said. The TSA would not comment on camera about the pepper spray incident, but said they take all security complaints seriously. |
