RACINE - Shoppers who made it to Regency Mall found deals they wanted Saturday evening.
"They had a lot of great deals, half off, 75-percent off," said Marlena Bennett.
"Buy one, get one half off, stuff like that," added her friend Allie Filippelli.
But, they encountered a sparse evening crowd on what is often a super shopping day.
"Less than what I expected," said Weynoka Johnson. "The lines were nice and easy to get in and out of the stores that I've been to."
Blame crummy conditions in Racine for keeping many away. Afternoon snow made even the main roads slippery. Sheriff's deputies responded to several weather related accidents in Racine and Kenosha Counties, some with injuries.
The day started busy, mall management said.
As the weather got worse outside, mall employees started to see fewer customers inside.
"Now, as you can see, it's completely dead," said Waleed Saad, who runs three concourse kiosks. "The ground's covered with snow and not many people are out there driving as I can see."
Workers searched the Internet, texted or just stood outside their stores to pass the time.
As for Eric Poplawski, he refused to let a snowstorm spoil his day after Christmas tradition.
"You're getting stuff for half price, sometimes getting stuff for free just because you're coming through the snow," he told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray. "Every year I do it."
A trained spotter reported to the National Weather Service that 4.1 inches of snow fell in Racine from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m. Saturday. Meteorologists predicted light snow to continue falling throughout the night.
