Fans Celebrate UW-Whitewater's D3 Title
WHITEWATER- Huge doesn’t even begin to describe Saturday for Whitewater fans. The Warhawks brought home their second national championship in just three years.
“It feels amazing. This is great. To be able to bring a national championship back here to the state of Wisconsin, it’s an amazing feeling,” said defensive back Troney Shumpert of Milwaukee.
The UW-Whitewater Warhawks captured the NCAA Division III football championship on Saturday, beating Mount Union 38 to 28. The game was tense, with Mount Union tying things up in the fourth quarter. But Whitewater came through.
“It was a surreal moment. We were just waiting for the clock to tick zero. That’s when the celebration started,” Shumpert said.
The celebration hasn’t stopped since. The Warhawks got a hero’s welcome back home, as they arrived on campus on fire trucks. The championship is a big deal for the town of 13,000.
“I think it’s really big for the town, it’s great for the school. Nothing but good things can happen from this,” said Scott Stevenson of Whitewater.
