KENOSHA - The family of a slain Kenosha County sheriff's deputy says they're overwhelmed by the support of the community. Frank Fabiano left behind a wife and young daughter.

Deputy Fabiano, 44, was killed Wednesday night in a shootout following a traffic stop.

Fabiano's sister-in-law, Danette Beiser, publicly thanked the Kenosha community on Friday for all the support the family has received.

"The things that the community is doing right now is almost overwhelming. Their support and their concern, and they are helping with so many different things that the family needs help with right now,” Fabiano's sister-in-law, Danette Beiser, said.

Beiser said the most difficult thing for Fabiano's widow has been trying to explain everything to their young daughter.

"Amy is being very strong. And we are trying to work with Angelina through this time as far as on a level that a 7-year-old can comprehend,” Beiser said.

Fabiano was also known for being an avid golfer. His friends at Brighton Dale Golf Course are also doing what they can. They put up several buckets to collect money that will go toward a memorial fund for his daughter.

"It’s pretty upsetting, actually, because he was such a nice guy and everyone got along with him,” Brighton Dale manager Rus Williams said. "Everybody wants to chip in and help his family out. We know money doesn’t take the place of him or anything, but everyone wants to chip in and help out his family.”

SUSPECT IN COURT

More details are now being revealed about the suspect, Ezeiquiel Lopez. He made his first court appearance in Kenosha on Friday.

Kenosha County District Attorney Robert Zapf says Lopez is an illegal immigrant with prior arrests in Utah, Texas, Missouri, and Kenosha County.

He has been convicted of lewd and lascivious conduct, unlawful carrying of a weapon, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, battery, and domestic violence.

According to the criminal complaint, Lopez told investigators after his arrest that he was upset that his wife was having an affair. He said he was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, and he bought a gun from a local gang member. He claims he doesn't remember shooting Deputy Fabiano.

A man is now claiming he heard Lopez admit to the crime on the night of the shooting. The man spoke to TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Melanie Stout and asked not to be identified.

He claims he was in the holding cell next to Lopez. Lopez was allegedly irate and he threatened officers.

“Beating on the glass, bloodying up the glass, swearing, "I’ll kill all of you, I killed one of you, I’ll kill another one of you," the man claims Lopez said.

Lopez is being charged with first degree homicide, which could carry a life sentence. His bail was set at $1 million.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

Funeral arrangements have been set for Deputy Fabiano. Visitation will be Tuesday at 4 p.m., at Piasecki-Althaus Funeral Home at 3720 39th Avenue.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. At Siebert Chapel, 2001 Alford Drive, on the Carthage College campus.
