Massive Toyota Recall

By Shelley Walcott

MILWAUKEE - It is a massive recall by the world's largest automaker --- Toyota plans to replace the gas pedals on nearly four million vehicles.

The concern: That gas pedals could become stuck in the floor mat. Toyota owner Thomas Joslyn says he doesn't really see that happening in his Tacoma.

"It has little pins that keep it in place. So if you keep it on the pins, there's no way it's going to move," said Joslyn.

But Toyota isn't taking any chances especially after a fiery crash in California earlier this year that killed four people. Investigators say a stuck gas pedal in the Lexus involved may be to blame.

So what Toyota is doing for now is asking drivers to remove the driver's side mat out of their vehicles.

"On a model by model basis, we're making more room between the floor of the vehicle and the bottom of the accelerator pedal," said Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons.

The Toyotas involved include the popular Camry as well as the Avalon, Prius, Tacoma, Tundra and two Lexus models. The company will send letters to owners next month and dealers will start swapping out gas pedals in January.
