Oconomowoc Homicide Suspect Returns To Wisconsin

By Tom Murray

MILWAUKEE - The man accused of hiring a hit man to kill his ex-girlfriend arrived Mitchell International Airport Tuesday afternoon. 41-year-old Darren Wold flew with an Oconomowoc police officer from Texas to Wisconsin to face homicide charges.

Detectives say Wold plotted to kill Kimberly Smith so he could have custody of their four-year-old son. Oconomowoc's police chief is confirming for the first time that Wold paid to have his ex-girlfriend murdered.

"I know there was some money being transferred, the exact amounts and when that occurred, I'm not sure," Chief Dave Beguhn told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray.

On KCBD-TV video captured Tuesday morning, Darren Wold is seen emerging from the Lubbock County Jail in plain clothes and handcuffs.

Wold arrived in Milwaukee on a Continental Airlines afternoon flight from Houston. He never set foot in Mitchell's passenger concourse. Instead, deputies put Wold in an unmarked squad car. He appeared to be laying down on the back seat to avoid a TODAY'S TMJ4 camera positioned at the sheriff's checkpoint. Wold apparently did agree to an interview with investigators.

"All information is useful," Beguhn said. "If you're asking did we get a clear admission of guilt, no, I don't believe they did."

Two accomplices are still in California awaiting extradition, Jack Johnson and Justin Welch. Police believe Wold used Johnson, a lifelong friend, as the middle man. Welch is accused of driving from California to Wisconsin to stab Smith in her own home.

Wold is due to make his initial appearance in a Waukesha County courtroom Wednesday afternoon.
