Local News2.1 Million Drop Down Cribs Being RecalledBy Charles BensonWAUKESHA - It's the largest crib recall in history. 2.1 million "drop down" cribs are being called "unsafe" for children. The are popular cribs sold at popular baby stores. We found parents double checking to see if their baby cribs are safe. "They are much easier to use," says Brandie Mixdorf. In fact, Brandie and her husband Joel were looking for a crib for their adorable 6-week-old daughter Eva, they wanted a drop down crib. They believe the one they have is safe. "When I heard the report I came in and looked it over checked it and wiggled it just to kind of double check," said Joel. But owners of Stork Craft cribs are being told to immediately stop using them until they can receive a repair kit. The drop rail can detach from the crib, leaving a gap into which babies can become stuck and suffocate. Four children have died, none in Wisconsin. "It's the one place intended to leave a child unattended," explained Nancy Cowles, Executive Director of Kids In Danger. "So in all likelihood, if something does happen, the parent probably won't be there at the time, and so we need to make them as safe as possible." Other problems range from broken parts to parents to incorrectly installing the drop down feature. Over the years, millions of these drop side cribs have been recalled but the Mixdorf's say it works for them. "It's horrible and terrible to hear that kids have died in the cribs," said Joel. "But the numbers are pretty few and I feel you just can't live in fear." The Mixdorf's don't have one of the cribs in question. But some of the recalled cribs were also sold under the Fischer Price label. Most were sold at bargain price retailers. |
