Woman Killed In Caledonia House Fire

CALEDONIA - Firefighters are working to determine what caused a fire that took the life of a Caledonia woman on Sunday. They've already determined there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

Neighbors on Charles St. in Caledonia woke up just before 8 a.m. to flames and smoke pouring from a home next door.

"It was very thick. My grandsons, they ran upstairs and looked outside, and they were like, "Oh my God, oh my God, it's all smoke!" said neighbor Denise Nitsch.

When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. They entered the home, but it was too late. 60-year-old Marie Erato was found dead inside. The fire started in her living room.

"It appears that the first floor sustained most of the heat and smoke damage," said Caledonia Fire Chief Richard Roeder.

He says it's possible the tragedy could have been prevented.

"Smoke detectors are the first line of defense when they're sleeping," Chief Roeder said.

Family members say Marie was a kind woman and a retired probation officer.
