3 Men Arrested in Oconomowoc Murder
OCONOMOWOC - Authorities have arrested three men in the October murder of an Oconomowoc woman in what they say was part of a plot by her ex-boyfriend Darren Wold to get custody of their 4-year-old son.
Kimberly Smith's ex-boyfriend is accused of conspiring with a longtime friend Jack Johnson to kill the single mother on October 1 inside her own home. Police say the couple's son was inside the home at the time, but did not witness the murder.
Justin Patrick Welch is the man police believe Wold and Johnson hired to travel to Wisconsin to kill Smith. Police believe Wold wanted Smith dead so that he could have custody of the couple's son.
Wold was arrested in Lubbock, Texas.
Johnson, who used to live in Waukesha and now lives in Mexico, was arrested trying to cross back into the United States.
Welch was arrested by Mexican police just south of the border. All three men are being held on $2 million bail.
Police are still trying to figure out how Johnson and Welch knew each other.
"We know that they had contact both electronically and in person, so that's one of the things that we are going down to try and interview them and try and get that connection between those two individuals," Oconomowoc Police Chief Dave Beguhn said.
