Has Christmas Arrived Too Soon?

By George Mallet

WEST ALLIS - On Tuesday night, they lit the big Christmas tree in the heart of town here. Then they had a big Christmas parade complete with Santa, elves and even wise men riding donkeys. And while it was an awful lot of fun, some of us were wondering if we might be starting all of this holiday stuff a little too early.

Walmart stores are already filled with Christmas goodies. Two local radio stations are playing Christmas music 24 hours a day.

Meantime, at least one  south side, Milwaukee lawn has been invaded by an army of plastic Santa's. TODAY'S TMJ4 knocked on the door of the home adjacent to the Santa-covered lawn and got no answer.

In West Allis, it was possible to find people who think Christmas may have arrived a bit early.

"I agree that it's way early," said Amy Hutter as she watched the Christmas parade with her husband and little boys. "But it is warmer than it would be in December."

A mixed-breed mutt named Sam watched the parade while wearing a red Christmas sweater muscled onto him by his cheerful owner. His indignant eyes said that Christmas had arrived too soon.

But Sandra Martell, sporting a smart Santa hat, wasn't buying into the notion that Christmas arrived too soon.

"It's good for the economy," she said with conviction.
