Veterans Day Parade Takes on New Meaning
MILWAUKEE - At times, the mood fit the clear blue skies above Milwaukee's streets, but it seemed the constant beat of emotion at the Veterans Day parade was about the lives lost at Fort Hood.
"It's horrible. Words can't express it. I feel very sad about the whole entire situation," said Suzette Patrick who stood watching the parade with her family.
From average day citizens to those who know the pain all too well, the tragedy in Texas was hard to fathom.
"Walking passed that flag half staff, it's awful. To think that would happen on our Army base, I can't comprehend that," said Lisa Bixler, of Racine.
Bixler walked in the parade clutching the picture of her son Evan. He was killed in Iraq back in 2006.
Her advice is simple to family and friends now dealing with the hurt from Fort Hood.
"Reach out for those have gone through it. Reach out to those who know your pain, who know your sacrifice."
The same advice came from Donna Opicka. Her son, Dean was killed in Iraq in 2008.
"Let the people help you," she said. "It just helps to not be alone - to have people around who care."
