Face to Face with Ft. Hood Gunman
LODI - One Wisconsin soldier came face to face with the Fort Hood gunman and lived to tell about it
Grant Moxon, 23, is a mental health specialist with the 467th Medical Detachment Unit out of Madison. Two members of his unit were killed. Six, including Moxon, were injured.
Grant's father Dave Moxon said his son looked Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan in the eye just seconds before Hasan opened fire.
"He said he heard this commotion and he looks up and he's looking right into the face of this guy who raises his gun and shoots. He said he was within fifteen feet of him," Dave Moxon said.
Grant, an Army Reserve Specialist with the 467th, was shot in the leg.
"He said I went down under the desk and I just laid there like I was dead and played dead," Dave Moxon said.
Grant was filling out paperwork at the time of the shooting. He arrived at Fort Hood the day before and was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.
"He said I just can't believe how close I am. I'm surprised I didn't get shot in the head," Dave Moxon said.
Specialist Moxon didn't know Major Hasan, even though they were both headed to Afghanistan to counsel troubled soldiers. Dave is trying to stay positive... and says this experience will help Grant help others.
"I suppose that's great experience for a mental health expert that's supposed to be counseling others to be involved in something like this. I guess he has firsthand experience now," Dave Moxon said.
The family is still waiting to hear whether or not Grant will still be deployed to Afghanistan.
