Homeowner Chases Down Burglars

By Michael George

RACINE - A homeowner catches two burglars in the act. They ran off. But they probably didn't expect he would chase them down.

It's the second time in two weeks that someone in Racine County has chased down a group of burglars. Fortunately, the alleged criminals were caught and no one was hurt.

The latest incident happened on the 2300 block of James Blvd. in Racine. The burglars thought no one was home Monday afternoon, according to Racine police. It turns out the owner was just in the shower. He caught the burglars trying to break in and called police.

"They fled, he exited the house after getting quickly dressed, and a neighbor pointed out the direction they had run down the street," said Sgt. Bernie Kupper with the Racine Police Department.

That's when the owner decided to get in his truck and chase them. He followed, staying in touch with police, until officers arrested the burglars. Some Racine residents said they would do the same thing.

"I think I would. If you keep at a safe distance, with cell phones now, you can keep in touch with the police, let them know where you are," said Craig Aude.

The two men were arrested for attempted burglary and police are looking into whether they are responsible for other burglaries in the area.

Last week, Don Lockwood caught a group of burglars and actually jumped into the back of their pickup truck. Racine police aren't saying what these victims did was wrong. They are saying that victims should call police before anything else, and they shouldn't do anything that will make the situation more dangerous.

"When you do follow someone, remember, you don't know whether they are armed or not. Life is far more important than property," said Sgt. Kupper.
