South Milwaukee Gets Its First Shot at Swine Flu Vaccines

SOUTH MILWAUKEE -  People started lining up outside of the South Milwaukee Health Department three hours before the doors opened Wednesday.

And all of them wanted the same thing, the Swine flu or H1N1 vaccination.

"I got here about five minutes to six this morning," said Mindy Eltoft

Up before for the sun this morning, Eltoft was the first one to arrive in South Milwaukee, not just for herself, but for her unborn child due in March.

"I've been following the news and seeing the lines at other clinics and so I wanted to make sure," said Eltoft

She wanted to make sure especially after hearing the news a former South Milwaukee teacher died from Swine flu.

Gail Stapleton suffered from asthma which contributed to her death. And although she contracted the disease in Arizona, it was enough to get Mindy to South Milwaukee.

"This is very serious and I'll do anything I can do to protect myself and my child," she said.

She wasn't alone. Dozens of people waited in line at least an hour before the doors opened, a line that stretched around the building.

"I was trying to be the first in line but a lot of people beat us here so we just got a wait," said Donte Sims.

South Milwaukee had the flu mist vaccinations available for people in the high risk category, as well as the shots which are in high demand.

The proof is in lines like the one at South Milwaukee, filled with parents hoping to keep their kids healthy.

"I'm six months pregnant and he's a year old and we both need it and we can only get the shot," said Jaime Jansen.
