Local NewsIs Milwaukee Getting Fair Share of Vaccine?By Charles BensonMILWAUKEE - Is Milwaukee getting its fair share of the swine flu vaccine? The city's health department got 5,000 more doses of swine flu vaccine Tuesday, bringing the total to less than 13,000 doses for a city with 575,000 people. "I think, what we've received now is very reasonable and in line with what we are hearing other public health agencies have received," said Paul Biedrzycki at the Milwaukee Health Department. But city officials are disappointed and are arguing for more. Trying to figure out who gets what from the state isn't easy. Charles Benson asked, "Is there any easy answer to: What is the formula?" "No there really isn't," according to Seth Boffeli at the Wisconsin Department of Health. "Sometimes the distribution has been based on population, sometimes it has been based on the size of the hospitals," said Boffeli. Wisconsin's share of vaccine from the federal government is based on population. If the state followed that formula, Milwaukee should have 35,000 doses. Benson asked, "Can you explain to us why Milwaukee has been only able to get less than 15,000 doses so far, yet it is the biggest city in the state. Is that fair?" "Well again, it hasn't always been by population," said Boffeli. "The ultimate goal is to try to keep it as representative to the population in the state as possible." Once it all arrives, will it be too late? City health officials say no because they expect a second and even a third wave of swine flu, so they will keep giving out the shots. |
