Big Crowd Attends Milwaukee County Budget Public Hearing

By George Mallet

MILWAUKEE - Hundreds filled the Washington Park Senior Center Monday night to have their say about Milwaukee County's budget. Some don't want cuts. Some don't want new taxes. Everybody doesn't like something. County supervisors were all ears.

County Executive Scott Walker has proposed nearly 200 job cuts to make up a $3 million budget shortfall.

Allen Prentice doesn't want to lose his job. "I work outside," he said with a smile. "I enjoy that part of it."

Prentice has had his job for 43 years and turned out Monday night in an effort to convince the board that the parks and their employees have value.

"I want to keep working," Prentice said.

There were as many issues as there were people at Monday's meeting. Some want to save pools. Some want to save the Estabrook Dam. Others want to feed the hungry and maintain services for the mentally disabled. There were as many causes as there were people at the meeting, and there were a lot of people.

County supervisors have their work cut out for them. They don't want to accept Walker's proposed job cuts. But, they have a lot of ground to make up.

"I love the job," said Prentice. That may have been the most certain thing said Monday night.
