Injured Officer Sparks Police Pursuit

By Shelley Walcott

MILWAUKEE - It's not the kind of thing you want to see on a night when roads are slick, but Milwaukee police were involved in a 34 minute pursuit through several districts and three cities Thursday night.

It all started just after 6 p.m. near the intersection of Sherman and Burleigh. Police say the suspect was involved in a drug deal, and one of their officers approached his car in the BP gas station lot.

"He drove off with the officer hanging on to the car," said Deputy Inspector Gregory Thompson of the Milwaukee Police Department.

The suspect then sped off in his car with the officer falling to the ground.

Police were right behind the suspect. The chase went through several districts, then into West Milwaukee on Miller  Parkway.

At one point, witnesses say it appeared the suspect threw something from his car, prompting several officers to search an area in the middle of S. 43rd Street.

"We think drugs probably, because we think that’s what started that whole thing," said Inspector Thompson.

The pursuit pushed through an apartment complex in Greenfield. One woman says she was nearly hit.

"He came flying by me, I could see his driver’s side door was open and his door was flapping back and forth. He came right around  and missed me by about a foot," said Susan Roe.

Finally, Greenfield Police used stop sticks in the 3900 block of S. 43rd Street to end the chase.

"He jumped out of his car, ran, and we chased him between buildings.  He fought with officers and we had to taze him twice to take him into custody," said Inspector Thompson.

The suspect is now in police custody. He is a 40-year-old man with a history of drug offenses and had just been released from prison two days ago.

The suspect is being charged with fleeing and recklessly endangering safety. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The officer who was dragged was treated and released from the hospital, and suffered only minor bruising to his knee and hand.

There were reports of a couple of other minor accidents related to the pursuit, but no one else was hurt.
