Amish First-Time Driver Charged in Deadly Crash
NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- An 18-year-old Amish man who got behind the wheel of a car for the first time is charged in a crash that killed his friend.
Clark County court records say Rudy Gingerich of rural Greenwood lost control of the car and hit a culvert and driveway last August. A passenger, 21-year-old Tobias Hershberger, was thrown from the vehicle and killed. Gingerich received minor injuries.
Gingerich told police he had never driven a car before and that Hershberger was trying to help him steer at times. He's charged with hit and run involving death.
