"Go Ahead - Raise My Taxes"
WEST BEND - It's a tale of two taxpayer groups. Last month residents shouted don't raise taxes. Monday night a different group begged the school board not to cut programs.
"Go ahead: Raise my taxes." That’s what the residents said to their school board.
Eight hundred people turned out with big signs saying "No Cuts."
The board says it may have to cut programs and closed the high school pool because of a cut in state aid.
Residents like Kathy Meindle say yes to higher taxes no to cuts. "They've cut so deep I don't know where else they can cut," Meindle explained.
The School Board is looking at combining East and West high schools because of budget worries and closing the pool and cutting music and other programs for next year.
One hundred students protested the proposed cuts.
Junior Christina Marolla said, "There are a lot of things that students really value and we really need to keep in our schools."
At a packed meeting two weeks ago, residents voted against a 12 percent property tax increase that would have cost a $200,000 homeowner an extra $10 a month.
Right now, the board is looking at nine percent tax increase. A final vote is expected in two weeks.
