Two Runners Disqualified From Top of Lakefront Marathon

By George Mallet

MILWAUKEE - It is official. Corina Canitz is the winner of Sunday's Lakefront Marathon. The Brookfield mother of four was elevated to first place from third after two disqualifications ahead of her.

"I'm disappointed," Cassie Peller, the original winner, said Wednesday evening. "It is something that probably half of the people in the race did."

Peller was disqualified for receiving a water bottle between official aid stations.

The next finisher, Jennifer Goebel, was disqualified for using an iPod in the race.

"It is disappointing," Goebel said by telephone from Illinois Wednesday afternoon. "It is nice to think that you won but just to see that my time won't even be in the results now is disappointing."

Goebel's use of the electronic device violates USTAF rules.

"These young women were running at an elite level," said race director Kris Hinrichs. "They really ought to have known what the rules were."

"I think everyone should know the rules," conceded Peller. "I guess I didn't read them carefully enough."

Corina Canitz plans to donate her winner's check to The Jenny Crain Make it Happen Fund. Crain is an elite marathoner who sustained a traumatic head injury when she was struck by a car while running. She is still undergoing extensive rehabilitation.
