MILWAUKEE - Mother Nature left her mark across southeast Wisconsin Wednesday. High winds caused a number of problems. The wind knocked out power, closed schools, blew down trees and even took out the giant pumpkin at State Fair Park.
Reported wind gusts as high as 44 miles per hour at Mitchell International, and 55 miles per hour in Kenosha and Waukesha, have caused everything from downed power lines to broken tree limbs throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.
14,000 We Energies customers lost their power. As of 3 this afternoon, there were about 400 customers are still without power. The outages are very scattered.
Spokeswoman Irissol Arce says power will be restored to those customers anytime between now and 6:00 p.m.
The power outage even caused schools to close: Whitefish Bay Middle School and Tonawanda Elementary School in Elm Grove.
In Shorewood, a giant tree came crashing down on North Prospect Avenue, just north of Capitol Drive. Winds moved debris around many area streets.
The winds even knocked down the big pumpkin that houses a Halloween-themed store in the State Fair Park parking lot.
In 2008, the owner of Halloween Express bought a new tent after vandals destroyed his former one.
"Unfortunately, mother nature got the best of us," said Jon Majdoch. "We purchased a brand new tent after being vandalized last year, and noticed some problems with the seams we did our best to try and keep up with it."
"No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't keep up with the seams, so the air let out of the tent and down she comes."
Majdoch and his crew are planning on working hard to get his original pumpkin up and running by Saturday
Halloween Express does have eight other locations.
