Scott Walker's Twitter Page Restored after Being Suspended

MILWAUKEE - Nowadays, political campaigns are fought on smartphones connected to social networking Web sites like Twitter and Facebook. Just ask Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, a Republican candidate for governor.

"It's an excellent way to communicate to people where I'm at, what I'm thinking about, what articles I'm finding," Walker said.

It's also about fundraising. Walker says he's raised more than $250,000 online.

But on Monday, Walker's Twitter page was inexplicably shut down.

"See, it says, "Twitter suspended" right here," Walker said, indicating on his Blackberry that he could no longer access the site, one which was restored as of early Tuesday morning.

Walker thinks it was a politically motivated attack on his campaign.

"We don't know who exactly, but some groups, probably detractors from the campaign, come in. They sign up to be a follower, then, they unsign up. Then, they sign up again, claiming that it's spam," Walker said.

Spam is the online version of junk mail. When Twitter gets enough complaints that a Web site is promoting spam, they shut it down.

Walker's campaign is trying to get Twitter to restore his site and find out who's behind the attack.

"It shows we're the frontrunners, so people are going to be gunning for us all the time," Walker said.

Walker says he spoke with Republican political strategist Karl Rove, whose Twitter Web site was also suspended this week.

Walker's Twitter page is http://twitter.com/scottkwalker.
