Local NewsLocal Soldier Dies in AfghanistanBy Shelley WalcottKENOSHA - A Kenosha County native has died in Afghanistan. Army Specialist Kevin Graham was killed by a roadside bomb in Kandahar on Saturday. He was 27-years-old. Kevin's family says he lived life to the fullest, and that it was his adventurous spirit that led him into the Army in the first place. An example of Kevin's zest for life --- the time he was invited to an air show at the Kenosha Airport, and was invited to fly in a vintage World War II plane. "I don't know many 16-year-old boys that were offered to go up in a B-25 Mitchell," said his brother Sean Graham. Sean says Kevin always wanted to be in the military: "When he was younger he would run around the yard, playing army with his buddies in the woods dressed up in all the fatigues..." A native of Salem, Kevin joined the Army in 2007 and became a driver in a Stryker Brigade. He was deployed to Afghanistan in July. "We had known for about a year that that was where he was going to be going," said Sean. "That was before things started getting really out of hand. When he shipped out in July I was very, very concerned." And when Sean said goodbye to his brother, he knew it could be for the last time. But he takes comfort in knowing Kevin died for his country, and lived a life that made his family proud. "He was quite a guy, and I really enjoyed my time with him." A memorial service for Kevin Graham will be held in Washington October 8. Plans are still underway for a local service. |
