CHILTON Wis. - A forensic pathologist testified that Teresa Halbach's death was probably caused by gunshot wounds to her head. Evidence shows that Halbach was shot twice in her skull. But Steven Avery's lawyers disputed the findings that Halbach was killed by the gunshots.
Avery's lawyer questioned forensic pathologist Jeffrey Jentzen. Attorney Dean Strang suggested that it would be possible for Halbach to have first been killed by some other method before being shot. Jentzen said he was unable to determine that Halbach was alive at the time she was shot. Jentzen is the medical examiner for Milwaukee County who was asked to assist on the Halbach case.
Even though Jentzen admitted he cannot be sure that Halbach was alive at the time she was shot, he continued to insist that she was killed by the gunshots. Prosecutors pointed out that Jentzen has more than twenty years of experience.
Friday morning, a state crime lab expert said his analysis shows trace amounts of lead near the bullet entrance wounds in Halbach's skull. He believes that further proves the holes were caused by bullets.
Court ended early Friday, partially because of weather conditions in Chilton. The jury was also told they will not be required to attend court on Monday. Judge Patrick Willis plans to listen to the lawyers argue over issues in the case Monday that cannot be discussed in the jury's presence.
