Good Samaritan Helps Catch Would-Be Abductor
WEST ALLIS - Scott Burkhardt is amused by the details of his recent act as a Good Samaritan. When he told the story, he couldn't help but smile when he got to the funny parts. He was chasing down a bad guy who was having a hard time keeping his pants up.
"He had on the low slung pants and his pants were coming down a little bit at a time," Burkhardt said with a wry smile. "I said to myself, 'I can keep up with him because his pants are going to fall down eventually.'"
The chase began in the parking lot of The West Allis Town Center. When Burkhardt drove into the lot on Wednesday morning, he heard a piercing scream. That's when he saw a woman struggling with an attacker inside a min van. The woman's baby was strapped in the back seat. Burkhardt approached.
"The guy said 'this is a domestic dispute,'" Burkhardt recalled. "He told me to stay away."
But, Burkhardt kept coming. As he did so, the woman managed to wriggle free of her attacker's grip. That's when the man jumped out of the van and took off running. The 51-year-old Burkhardt was right on his heels.
"And we ran down through some apartments and down through an alley," Burkhardt said recalling the breathless sprint. "We ended up in The Pick 'n Save parking lot."
"I chased him into the store and he jumped over the people who were standing at the counter," Burkhardt said. "He grabbed the telephone and claimed that I was harassing him," he added as that smile appeared again.
Police didn't buy the story of the man with the jeans down around his knees. They now believe he intended to abduct his victim and make her withdrawal cash from an ATM.
