Alleged Bathroom Peeker Has Criminal Past 2/19/07

Michael George

BUTLER - The man accused of using a cell phone camera to try to take pictures of women in a bathroom at Mayfair Mall has been arrested for similar crimes before.

The suspect has not been charged yet. Court records show that he has five previous arrests for disorderly conduct.

Employees at the Butler Inn in Butler say they caught him red-handed in 2005. David Meiller said he was working the night shift at the Butler Inn when a customer told him there was a man in the women's restroom.

"He was in the back lavatory, and we got him to come out, and he was at that time, immediately trying to get out of the building," Meiller said.

He claimed he wrestled the suspect to the ground with the help of another customer.

"He kept trying to get up and out of the building and at one time said, "I'm going to bite you,'" Meiller remembered.

Employees told Butler police that they had seen him try to peek in the women's restroom three times before. But he always got away.

Employees say he probably picked the Butler Inn because the women's room is very close to the exit. Whenever he was discovered, they say he would run right out to his car.

Now that same man is a suspect in the Mayfair Mall incident. When Meiller heard the man has been arrested six times for similar crimes, he said something's got to be done to stop him.

"I definitely think he needs help, number one, number two possibly a little jail time," Meiller said.

The suspect was sentenced to six months in jail for his arrest in Butler. He was expected to be charged for the Mayfair Mall incident Tuesday.
