MPS Fight Goes To Madison
MADISON - The choice over who will run Milwaukee Public Schools won't be made by parents. It'll be made in Madison, by lawmakers.
State lawmakers had some tough questions for the Milwaukee Public Schools board of directors on Tuesday, saying they've heard promises about reform before.
"Why should we believe that you mean it now this time? That is the perception that's out there, and I want you to be aware of that," said Rep. Leah Vukmir ( R-Wauwatosa), who opposes mayoral control.
School Board members argued they are making real improvements in education and financial accountability.
"One of the major things we did last week was we adopted an office of accountability. That was the most comprehensive reform in MPS since 1991," said board president Michael Bonds.
To give the mayor power to pick the school board, state legislators would need to change the law. The mayor believes a change in MPS leadership is necessary. Opponents, including Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-Milwaukee), say mayoral control does nothing to solve problems in the schools.
"We are completely baffled, puzzled, bewildered, and confused by the proposed interventions," Congresswoman Moore said.
One legislator, who supports the school board, gave them a warning as well.
"Do not make this into a personal battle between the mayor and yourself, because that's what's happening here and it's not coming out looking good," said Rep. Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee).
Rep. Vukmir said she believes it is unlikely the mayor's proposal will pass the legislature.
