Shopping Mall Regulations

Heather Shannon

WAUWATOSA - Mayfair Mall has proposed banning all children from the mall without supervision.

This comes after several problems with rowdy teenagers. But Mayfair isn't the only mall that has restrictions.

The Grand Avenue Mall won't allow teenagers to be in the mall before 3 p.m. It's part of the truancy policy to keep kids in school. Security guards even check identification of anyone that looks to be school age.

The Grand Avenue also will not allow groups of more than three teens, and if they see teens are loitering and not shopping, they are automatically escorted out.

"It makes me feel a lot more safer," said shopper Melissa Sucharew.

Bayshore Town Center won't allow any child under 15 to be in the mall without an adult 21 or older after 9 p.m. The mall also prohibits groups of four or more teens.

Southridge Mall restricts groups of four or more that are congregating. Brookfield Square and Regency Mall in Racine have mall security working closely with local police department. All of the area malls list their codes of conduct at every entrance.

The codes of conduct are all very similar and include a ban on fighting, vulgar language and offensive clothing.

"They're really cracking down on things now, " Sucharew said.
