Girl Dies After Having Tonsils Out

By Heather Shannon

MILWAUKEE - Fifteen-year-old Ambia Lawrence of Milwaukee got her tonsils taken out on Friday at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. She died on Sunday afternoon, and her family wants to know why.

Clutching the statue to an angel close to her heart, Ambia Lawrence's mother Debra fought back tears as she talked about her daughter. She wants the world to know how much Ambia will be missed, but she was too upset to talk on camera about her daughter.

Ambia would have been a sophomore at Bay View High School. She loved English and wanted to be a lawyer. She couldn't wait to turn 16 and get her driver's license.

But her dreams were cut short on Sunday, when she died inside her grandmother's apartment. Her family said she got ready for church, sat down in a chair, and never got up.

A Medical Examiner's report said Ambia, who has no prior medical problems, had her tonsils and adenoids removed because she had a snoring problem. She was given the painkiller Roxicet, which her family said made her groggy.

An autopsy will be performed Tuesday. The family hopes that will give them answers about why their beloved Ambia was taken from them so soon.

Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center did not comment, citing patient privacy laws.

Debra said her daughter's organs were donated to sick children.
