Waukesha Bicyclist Killed in Iowa County
WAUKESHA - Allen Belonger loved bike riding but his wife says she worried about his safety while riding out on country roads. Belonger was killed when a pick up truck turned in front of him on a rural road.
Cycling was a passion for Allen Belonger. He was one of the leaders for the Spring City Spinners Bicycle Club.
Jamie Ryan is one of the riders. "He just loved being with everyone," said Ryan.
Ryan was not with Belonger when he was killed in Iowa County on Saturday.
Belonger hit a pickup truck driven by a 16-year-old New Berlin boy who told investigators he had been drinking the night before with his father.
Belonger was participating in the Insane Terrain Challenge, a grueling ride through the hills southwest of Madison. He was going downhill when he hit the truck.
Ryan says Belonger stressed bike safety to riders as recently as last Wednesday. "He was the one who was telling everyone, 'Go to the safety meeting,' and then this happened to him a few days later.
Belonger was also a father and husband. His family is devastated and so is the bike club.
"We are stunned," said Ryan. "This is a man who was 62-years-old and who was absolutely filled with love, loved life and he was a huge part of our club."
Investigators have not issued any charges. They are waiting for blood alcohol results. They do say the teenager failed to yield the right away.
The bike club plans on holding a ride in Belonger’s honor.
