Second Inmate Escapes from Kenosha Correctional Center In a Week

By Heather Shannon

KENOSHA--Two convicted felons escaped from the minimum security Kenosha Correctional Center in the last week.  Joshua Cook, 25, is from Racine.  He was at Kenosha Correctional for obstruction and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

“We want him apprehended as soon as possible," Kenosha Correctional Superintendent Ann Krueger said.

Kenosha Correctional alerted police after Cook didn't show up to work on Tuesday at Kenosha Beef.  Like many other inmates, Cook is allowed to leave for work.  But he never showed up.

“What will you change on your part to make sure this doesn’t happen again?” reporter Heather Shannon asked.

“What we’re doing after every escape, we do an after action report," Krueger responded.

Krueger doesn't fault her officers, and blames the inmates.

“In these ones we followed policy accurately. The inmates do have some responsibility," Krueger said.

But responsibility wasn't enough to keep escaped inmate Eric Adams, who was convicted of murder, at this minimum security center.  Adams, 29, is accused of running away through an unlocked door after officers tried to take away his cell phone.  Inmates are not allowed to have cell phones.

“Should people in the neighborhood feel safe?” Shannon asked.

“I think so,” Krueger responded.

But after two escapes, neighborhood parents don't feel safe.

"It's kind of scary.  We've got a bunch of kids out here," neighbor Latrice Reed said.

The center is visible from Nacajai Wright's living room.  Having a two year old son who plays outside, she wishes someone would have told her about the escapes.

"I would be concerned for the simple fact that I was not notified. Not everyone reads the newspapers or watches the news," Wright said.
