Drivers To Be Pulled Over For Not Wearing Safety Belt

By The WTMJ News Team

Starting this week, officers can pull you over simply for wearing your seat belt.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced a change in policy which previously would only allow for officers to issue a ticket for not wearing a safety belt if a driver has been pulled over for an additional violation.

"The state's safety belt law, which has been in effect since 1987, will now be enforced just like any other traffic safety law," said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent David Collins in a statement.

"Previously, officers had to stop motorists for another violation before they could issue a safety belt citation. With the change to primary enforcement, officers only need to observe an unbuckled driver or passenger in order to stop the vehicle and ticket the offender."

A ticket for not locking your safety belt will cost you $10.
