Holiday Traffic Not As Bad As Expected

By Michael George

KENOSHA - Department of Transportation officials predicted a perfect storm for bad traffic on I-94 this weekend. Not only was it a holiday weekend, many baseball fans drove to Chicago for the Brewers vs. Cubs series. Plus, construction on I-94 shut down lanes in Kenosha County.

There's no question it was slow going on I-94 southbound in Kenosha County on Sunday. Due to construction, some parts of I-94 are down to just two lanes. The bad traffic was no surprise to Felix Arrington of Oshkosh. "This is the worst I have seen it in a while," Arrington said.

While it was slow going this weekend, the traffic wasn't as bad as expected. The State Patrol reported traffic to be comparable to previous 4th of July weekends, and there were no major accidents in that area of I-94.

The Department of Transportation warned Wisconsin drivers to stay clear of I-94 in Racine and Kenosha counties this weekend due to the heavy traffic coming in from Illinois. The DOT suggested Wisconsin drivers use the side streets. That warning outraged Wisconsinites like Dale Widmar.

In an e-mail to TODAY'S TMJ4, Widmar wrote, "Seriously? Those of us who live in this state should not be able to enjoy it, but should instead stay off the road so people from Illinois can take advantage of what Wisconsin has to offer?"

Chris Weber, on his way back to Illinois from Summerfest, said Wisconsin traffic is always better than Illinois traffic.

"It looks fine, everything looks good. It's 55 miles an hour in a work zone," Weber said, describing I-94 traffic.

Much of the construction that was halted over the weekend is expected to resume on Monday morning.
