Firework Seriously Injures 12-Year-Old Boy

By Tom Murray

HELENVILLE - A backyard Fourth of July fireworks party ended when a misguided firework hit a 12-year-old boy.

Tony Milbrath knew something was wrong when the fireworks stopped abruptly Saturday night at the farm next door. His neighbors had planned a night full of fun at their rural farm in Helenville, just east of Jefferson in Jefferson County.

"We knew it was going to be lot more," he told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray. "We heard two booms and that was it."
The boy was hit on the side of his face Milbrath explained.

Helenville Fire Chief Ray Madison said the firework seemed small, an inch and a half long or less, but this accident proves it doesn't take much to cause serious injury.

A Flight for Life helicopter airlifted the boy from the farm on Sunshine Road to Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa. He suffers from trauma to the head from the sheer force of the firework. He was conscious when he left the farm, said Madison.

"Everybody wants to celebrate, but you don't want the party to end in tragedy as it did last night," said Madison. "It was something you can buy at one of these roadside stands. Everybody assumes they're safe, but they're really not."

A Children's Hospital spokesperson said the boy's family asked that no additional information be released on his condition.
