Bar Raises Funds for Accused Drunk Driver
CAMPBELLSPORT - A tavern is holding a fundraiser for a man arrested for drunk driving.
The man's girlfriend died when he crashed his motorcycle. Now, the tavern where the two were drinking is raising money to help pay his legal bills.
The controversial event will be held at Fatties on the Lake, a place where Jay Taylor used to work.
The flyer for the event reads like friends helping friends. It says Jay Taylor was involved in a tragic bike accident and the benefit will help their friend down the long, hard road ahead of him.
There's a twist, though. The motorcycle crash cost Taylor's passenger, Crystal Daly, her life. Police say Taylor was driving drunk when it happened.
Daly's sister, Angel Young, is horrified. "They keep calling this an accident. No, an accident is not when you get on a bike or in a car drinking and driving. That's not an accident you know? That's neglect is what I call it."
The flyer says the benefit will offer bikini car washes, have a pig roast and free beer after 6.
"It's so heart wrenching to see that they're okay with doing a car wash and giving out free beer after 6 p.m. Promoting drinking and driving after a death on a motorcycle is heartbreaking."
The organizer of the benefit didn't want to be identified, but claims he does not condone drinking and driving. "We don't condone it. Like I said, we've given more safe rides out there than any bar I know of."
The bar says they will offer free camping and rides for those who drink too much. They also say they don't mean any disrespect toward Daly or her family.
"I send my condolences to the family of Crystal. I feel for all their grief and everything along with JT's family what they are going through."
The event organizers say it will go on no matter what. Daly's family will be outside the bar in protest on July 11.
