UW-La Crosse Eliminating Baseball, Tennis

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin-La Crosse will eliminate its baseball and men's tennis teams.

The cuts will be official when Chancellor Joe Gow notifies the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at a meeting Wednesday.

The Division III school has had to cut $400,000 because of the uncertainty over whether unionized state employees will give back a 2 percent pay increase as requested by Gov. Jim Doyle.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Wisconsin-River Falls already have dropped baseball.

Eliminating the two sports programs will save La Crosse $60,000 by not paying for salaries, team travel, training and equipment. Gow says they chose baseball over other sports because of its large travel bills.

Men's tennis was picked because it's not a WIAC conference championship sport.
