Local NewsDNA Testing Key to Strangler CasesBy By Charles Benson with Jay SorgiMILWAUKEE - Experts are pouring over more DNA evidence to see if more cases are tied to the North Side Strangler. When cases like this turn cold, police look for hot tip that can jump start the investigation. New DNA technology gave Milwaukee Police a missing a clue they need to help find the North Side Strangler. It may not look like the hi-tech labs from the crime fighting tv shows, but the DNA lab in Milwaukee is getting real life results. It's there police have uncovered the works of a serial killer by linking seven victims to the North Side Strangler, thanks to DNA. Forensic scientist Chira Wuensch can't talk specifics about the serial killer, but she can tells us how DNA testing is now faster and easier. "See that small piece of blood on the tip of the razor? That's all she needs to find the DNA of a killer," said Wuensch as she demonstrated the process. "Years ago, it would have taken a bigger sample to pull a profile and months instead of weeks to get results." They've improved the process over the last ten years, dramatically allowing us to get a profile for something that we weren't able to get before. That's opened the door to another big break in technology. The lab can now get DNA from tiny skin cells. "We've increased that now to use it for other type of cases," explained Wuensch. That includes strangulation, the link to the North Side Strangler cases. The lab is doing DNA testing on more than 20 unsolved homicides that involved prostitutes to see if the North Side Strangler committed those murders. |
