Lake Winnebago Survivor, 7, Leaves Hospital

By Tom Murray

WAUWATOSA - For the first time since the accident that nearly claimed her life, Tiffany Dombroski felt fresh air on her face. Her mother rolled down the window of their minivan so this 7-year-old could wave to TV cameras outside Children’s Hospital. “This is a miracle,” said Michael Dombrowski,” Tiffany’s father. “There’s no explanation the doctors really don’t understand how she could have come out as well as she has.” Tiffany went to the sturgeon spearing opener on Lake Winnebago with her best friend, Savannah, on Valentines Day. Their truck Savannah’s father drove crashed through the ice. Savannah, 9, and her father Dan Kleinhans drowned. Yet, somehow, after half an hour submerged in frigid water, Tiffany survived. “The doors were locked. The windows were shut. It was impossible to get out,” said Michael Dombrowski. “She was just so far gone with being under water that every single thing that was done by every emergency person, by volunteers it was all critical in saving her life.” It's been a difficult road to recovery. She spent a week on life support. Tiffany had to learn how to eat, walk and talk all over again. “The hands are probably the most frustrating part for her right now, she has a hard time grasping things,” said Jennifer Dombrowski, Tiffany’s mother. Talking is also still a challenge. Tiffany has trouble verbalizing what she’s thinking. One of five children, Tiffany will return home to Manitowoc to a special surprise. Relatives painted the walls of her room converting it into a princess theme. Michael Dombrowski attributes his daughter’s process to her care at Children’s Hospital, their faith and a network of prayer support. “We have to be thankful to both those that we’re praying and all the emergency personnel that did that right thing,” he said. “The news doesn’t usually talk about faith in God, but when you have something like this, what are you going to do, nobody can explain it.” Tiffany says she is most excited about seeing her school friends again. Her parents hope Tiffany will be well enough for summer school so she can start the third grade with classmates in the fall. After leaving the hospital, Tiffany went with her family to St. John the Evangelist church in Greenfield. Her father is a regular musician at the church's Friday fish fry suppers. The congregation has been following Tiffany's progress and Friday night, she was the guest of honor.
