Officer And Puppy Attacked By Dog
By Michael George
KENOSHA - A puppy was brutally attacked by another dog and the puppy's owner was right in the middle of it.
"Brewer" is a 10-month old beagle. Brewer and his owner, Lt. Jane Finley of the Kenosha Police Department, were out for a walk when they were attacked by another dog.
"I am trained to handle emergencies, and I did everything I could and still couldn't protect my dog or myself," said Finley.
As she spoke, her dog, Brewer, whimpered. Brewer has severe wounds over his body and requires regular painkillers. He had plastic tubes and sutures in his body. The vets are hopeful he can recover.
"I felt so helpless. I couldn't get him off. Nothing I did affected this dog," Finley said.
Finley says the dog, which is listed in vaccination reports as a pit bull mix but the Humane Society says is an American bulldog, attacked without any provocation. When Finley tried to help, she was bitten on the hand. The owner of the pit bull eventually heard the screams and pulled his dog off of Brewer.
"He just said, "Hey, I'm sorry," but he never asked how we were, how my dog was, if he could help us in any way," Finley said.
The owner told police he had owned the dog for only two weeks, and he suspected it jumped over his backyard fence. No on answered when TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Michael George visited his home on Monday. But Finley believes the owner needs to be held responsible.
"I don't believe the dog was secured properly, and whether or not it was vicious before doesn't really matter, because it was vicious and it appeared to be trained that way," Finley said.
The dog is under quarantine by the Humane Society while a decision is made about whether or not to put the dog down.
Finley says her hand injury is not serious and she plans to return to work soon.
